Kolkata celebrates Mrinal Sen 101st anniversary.
Mrinal Sen has been one of the faces of the parallel cinema movement in India since the 1960s. He was the master craftsman of low-budget films among the contemporaries of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Tapan Sinha. Apart from Bengali, he also directed several Hindi and Telugu films. His remarkable films are 'Bhuvan Som', 'Kolkata 71', 'Padatik', 'Mrigaya', 'Chalchitra', 'Interview' etc.
He believed in left-wing ideology. Most of his films have repeatedly reflected the socio-economic problems and political crises of middle-class Bengali life. He has been honoured with several national and international awards, including 'Padma Bhushan'(1983), 'Dadasaheb Phalke'(2003).
On his 101st birthday on May 14, the teaser of his autobiographical film Padatikwas released at Nandan in Kolkata. Directed by Sreejit Mukhopadhyay, the film stars prominent Bangladeshi actor Chanchal Chowdhury as Mrinal Sen and Bidipta Chakraborty as his wife, Geeta Sen.
